iRacing: IMSA at Watkins Glen and FIA F4 gets going

Round 3 of the IMSA Esports Global Championship ran on Sunday 25 October at Watkins Glen, on the Boot layout: 2 hours and 40 minutes of multi-class racing.

  • GTP: the #33 Verstappen Sim Racing BMW of Enzo Bonito and Sam Kuitert won. The #8 Grid-and-Go.com eSports Aston Martin looked set for the win, but dropped back after computer issues.
  • GTD: the #132 Bleu Mercure Esport Porsche of Vasilios Beletsiotis and Thibaud Prevot won for the second race in a row. Both winners started third.
  • Standings: after three races, Bleu Mercure leads both classes by more than 100 points. Round 4 is at Laguna Seca on 8 November.

On Saturday 31 October the FIA F4 Global Esports Championship presented by MOZA began. Thirty drivers from the Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe race with fixed setups, and the tracks are only revealed 24 hours in advance. The first two races were at Mid-Ohio and Fuji.

  • Format: two 15-minute races per evening, each with 10 minutes of practice and 10 minutes of qualifying.
  • Calendar: 31 October, 7, 14 and 21 November.
  • Defending champion: Henry Moore from the United Kingdom, who runs the number 1.

From the pit wall A track you only hear about the day before and a fixed setup: whoever learns a circuit fastest wins here. You can practise that yourself too; read your first online race for the basics.

RaceRoom: foveated rendering for VR

A week after the Historic Update, RaceRoom released a 1.3 GB update on Wednesday 28 October (client 0.9.9.19). The headline is foveated rendering for VR: the middle of each eye's view renders at full resolution and the rest at a lower one. At the default settings the game then renders only a third of the pixels.

  • Headsets: it works with any OpenXR headset and needs no extra software. The sharp area follows your head, not your eyes.
  • Switching it on: it is off by default. Turn on Foveated Rendering in the VR options. Among other things you set the resolution outside the focus area (default 40%) and the width and height of that area (40% each).
  • More gain: according to KW Studios the gain is larger with the "RaceRoom (VR) with DXVK" launch option in Steam.

There is also a Horizon Lock slider for the cockpit camera. The game no longer freezes for up to a minute when the content server doesn't answer, which could get you dropped from a ranked server. At Zandvoort (Modern) a lagging TV camera has been fixed.

From the pit wall A third of the pixels is a big gain if you want to run Spa '95 with a full grid in VR. We'll leave the defaults alone first and only tweak after that.

Gran Turismo 7: Fanatec Gran Turismo Eifel Cup

On Monday 2 November at 12:00 UTC the Fanatec Gran Turismo Eifel Cup 2026 starts in Gran Turismo 7, a global online time trial hosted by Fanatec. It runs until 16 November, 12:00 UTC.

  • Car and track: the Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) '22 on the Nürburgring GP (5,148 metres), on Racing: Hard tyres and with specified car settings.
  • Penalties: touch the wall or cut a corner and your time doesn't count.
  • Prizes: the fastest player in each region picks a Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro (8Nm) or a set of Podium Pedals Sport. The Netherlands and Belgium are in Europe / Middle East / Africa. To win a prize you must be 18 or older when the event begins; younger players can still take part.
  • How to enter: through Online Time Trials in the Sport pavilion on the World Map.

From the pit wall One touch of the wall and your lap is gone. So put in a few clean laps first and only then hunt for the last tenths.

Hardware: Asetek Initium DD10

Asetek released the Initium DD10, a 10 Nm direct drive base, on 27 October. With the separately sold Asetek Racing Wheelbase Boost Kit it goes to 14 Nm; you only swap the power supply.

  • Quick release: zero play, with USB passthrough. According to Asetek it also works with wheels from other brands.
  • Tech: a 14-bit encoder (16,384 steps per turn), USB-C and the RaceHub software. It weighs 7.92 kg.
  • Price: € 419.33 excl. VAT in Asetek's European web shop, which lists PC as the platform.

From the pit wall 10 Nm now and 14 Nm later without a new base: handy if you upgrade step by step. Still planning the rest of your setup? Read our guide to building a sim racing rig.
